Q: I sold property but received the tax bill for 2007 taxes.
A: The last date that deed changes were made before tax statements were sent out was September 27, 2007. If you sold the property after that date, the property has not been changed to the new owners name yet. As soon as the ownership change is made, a new tax statement will be sent out to the new owner. As the January 1 owner, you are still liable for making sure the taxes are paid, even if they were prorated at closing.
Q. My mortgage company collects escrow for my taxes, but I received a tax bill.
A. If your mortgage company has notified this office that they will pay your taxes, a tax bill was sent to them and a duplicate sent to you. Most mortgage companies do pay the accounts they collect escrow on, however, it is your responsibility to make sure your taxes are paid. You can do this on the web, by going through the property search to your property and checking the 'tax due' tab.
